Expert Car Care Inc.

When your mechanic starts describing the possible work that needs to be done on your vehicle, it often sounds like a foreign language. To help you interpret a few of the more common terms, we have put together a list for drivers to know. Of course, you should also read your owner’s manual to know the right automotive service items recommended for your specific vehicle. Or your mechanic should be able to give you a clear explanation of the automotive repair, plus how much it will cost.

So what are the basics of automotive service? This list covers only the most common automotive service items that you should know about.

  • “Change the oil and replace the filter” – It is vital that you know the oil change interval recommended for your vehicle, along with knowing what kind of oil to use. Replacing the oil filter will help keep the oil clean as it circulates.
  • “Condition of the distributor?” – As part of the ignition system, the distributor delivers the right amount of electrical voltage to each spark plug at the right time. If the distributor is failing, you will start to experience starting problems. Starting problems can also be caused by a bad car battery, an alternator that is going bad, or dirty spark plugs.
  • “Check the Brake fluid” – The brake fluid is pressurized to squeeze the brake pads around in the rotors, slowing or stopping your car as you step on the brake pedal.
  • “Top-off the Radiator” – As part of your vehicle’s cooling system, the radiator should contain the correct mixture of coolant/antifreeze and water. This mixture circulates through the motor to keep it from overheating, then returning to the radiator to be cooled off again. Be sure to only operate your car when the level of the antifreeze is at the best possible.
  • “Time for a Tune-up” – The tune up is now referred to as the “maintenance service schedule.” You will notice at least four major benefits—your vehicle will start easier, increase its performance level, increase fuel economy, and reduce the number of toxic emissions into the atmosphere.
