Many people may still be planning a summer road trip. Everyone certainly wants a safe and reliable vehicle whether for a long trip or for their short commute to work. The first thing on your planning list should be to schedule an auto service to see if there are any potential problems that could occur while on the road. You definitely don’t want to break down and find yourself calling a tow truck to an unfamiliar auto shop.
Our auto shop offers five driving tips for safer driving:
- Take care of preventative maintenance items: Check all the fluids (oil, brake, transmission, radiator, etc.), and replace or top-off as necessary. If an oil change will be due while you are on the road, have it done before you leave. Check the brakes, battery, alternator, wiper blades, and lights to make sure everything is in tip-top condition.
- Check the condition of your tires: Inspect your tires (and the spare) for signs of abnormal tread wear and make sure they have the correct inflation pressure. Have your tires rotated when you have the oil changed (about every 5,000 to 6,000 miles), and the alignment and balancing checked and adjusted. If the tread is wearing low, it might be safer to buy a new set of tires.
- Clean out your car: Use all-weather floor mats to keep your carpets clean. Also, keep your windows clean so there is nothing obstructing your view. Removing unnecessary weight from the trunk and backseat will also increase fuel economy.
- Inspect the radiator: Make sure the ratio of coolant and water is adequate for hot temperatures, and that the hoses have no cracks or bulges for coolant to leak out.
- Pack a roadside emergency kit: Include a flashlight, flares, jack, blanket, cell phone charger, snacks, and water.
Even with the best of planning, the unexpected could still happen on a road trip. But, you will gain peace of mind knowing that you have done your part in making your car as safe as possible. Not only will you have a stress-free drive, but you will benefit from increased gas mileage and level of performance!
