Expert Car Care Inc.

So you need some brake repair work done on your vehicle? Any type of car repair is not fun, both financially and time-wise. However, taking care of your brakes is critical for driving safely. It is better to put out a few dollars upfront to make sure your vehicle is driving as safe as possible rather than driving a vehicle that is not safe. A common question is, “How much does brake repair cost?” In terms of driving safety, brake service is worth every penny!

The braking system is made up of several components, rotors, calipers, pads, discs, hoses, and drums. Neglecting just one of these components can cause damage to any or all of them. There are three common components that will wear out over time and need to be replaced. They are:

  1. Brake Pads – If you hear an awful grinding or squealing sound when the brakes are engaged, it is the sound of metal on metal. This means the brake pads may need to be replaced. It is common for pads to get worn down, but if they aren’t replaced in a timely manner, it can cause damage to the calipers and/or rotors.
  2. Calipers - Calipers squeeze the brake pads against the rotors, making your vehicle stop, to put it simply. The cost to replace calipers can get pricey, depending on the make and model of your vehicle.
  3. Rotors - You especially don’t want any damage to the rotors. The calipers push the brake pads against the wall of the rotor, causing the friction that
Brings your vehicle to a stop. Rotors have a minimum thickness specification and if your rotor is within that minimum thickness, it may only need to be resurfaced, a much cheaper option than replacement.

The cost of brake repair will vary depending on exactly what needs to be done. Ask your brake expert for an estimated dollar amount. It could vary a little from shop to shop, but most shops follow a general guideline.

Tip to Remember: Brake service is not to be taken lightly. Sometimes spending a little extra knowing you’ll be safe is worth it. Ask your auto shop if they offer free brake inspections so you know you are driving as safe as possible!
