Expert Car Care Inc.

In years past, the term “car tune up” simply meant having the spark plugs replaced, and the distributor cap and rotors either cleaned or replaced about every 30,000-45,000 miles just to keep your car running smoothly.

In newer cars, everything is controlled by computers and there is basically nothing to be adjusted. For today’s cars, the term “tune up” is used to refer to a major service of the preventive vehicle maintenance recommended by the manufacturer to ensure that your vehicle will continue to perform well. The mileage interval for these maintenance items will vary, so be sure to check your owner’s manual or ask your trusted auto mechanic. The type of tune up required for your vehicle is determined by three factors--its age, number of miles driven, and maintenance history.

A car tune up is usually recommended if you start to notice any of the following problems:

  • Frequent stalling problems.
  • When idling or accelerating, the engine runs rough.
  • Your car is hard to start.

When you schedule a car tune up, here is what you can expect to have cleaned, adjusted or replaced:

  • Spark plugs
  • Fuel pump and filter
  • Fuel injectors
  • Engine timing and idle
  • PCV valve
  • Points and condenser.

Even if a tune up isn’t required very often, it’s a good idea to have the ignition system checked and tuned more often so that any necessary adjustments can be made. Especially if your driving consists of stop-and-go conditions, pull heavy loads such as a trailer or boat, or drive in mountainous areas.
