Hearing unusual noises coming from under the hood? Feeling strange vibrations in the steering wheel and seat while you’re driving down the road? Don’t wait to see if these problems go away before heading to your auto shop for an inspection. These are signs that damage could be taking place in the engine or transmission, resulting in a costly transmission repair.
What are the signs of a bad transmission, you ask? One or more of the following problems may become obvious:
- Shifting Problems: You may start to hear whining, clunking, or thumping sounds when shifting gears, or it may be hard to shift, along with jerking, stalling, or popping back out of gear.
- Burning Smell: The transmission fluid could be overheating.
- Fluid Leaking: A puddle under your car could mean transmission fluid is leaking. Find the source of the leak to make sure you aren’t driving with low levels of either transmission fluid or motor oil.
- Excessive Noise: A noisy transmission can often be resolved with a transmission flush. If that doesn’t quieten the transmission down, a more thorough inspection will be necessary.
- “Service Engine” light illuminates: The transmission warning light on the dash panel could just be a bad sensor. But shifting problems together with the warning light could mean there is a more serious problem in the transmission. Ask you, mechanic, to run a diagnostic test to pinpoint the problem.
- Transmission Failure: Consistently neglecting the recommended transmission service may lead to complete transmission failure. There are a couple of transmission repair options, such as a transmission rebuild or replacing it entirely, that may be viable for you, depending on the severity.
Tip to Remember: It is much more cost-effective to keep up with recommended transmission service than to wait until a major transmission repair is needed, or having to purchase a new vehicle!
