Expert Car Care Inc.

Winter weather will soon be on the way in many parts of the country. To ensure that your vehicle can survive the harsh weather ahead, schedule a car diagnostic service to analyze the overall performance of your vehicle. Even though your car may appear to be running just fine, a car diagnostic is a good test to see if your vehicle is working at its optimum level of efficiency, or if it is starting to lose some of its power and performance capabilities. It may be time for a tune up to adjust some of the critical operating systems.

What does an auto tune up consist of? Here is the basic tune up checklist:

  • Spark plugs—Spark plugs in good condition should have light tan or gray insulator firing noses with a strong enough spark to ignite the fuel.
  • Fuel pump and filter—A clean fuel filter allows the fuel pump to do its job efficiently.
  • Fuel injectors—Make sure they are clean so that dirt or other deposits cannot restrict the amount of fuel delivered to the engine and that there is no buildup affecting the efficiency of the spark plugs.
  • Air filter—Have the air filter replaced at least once a year so the engine can receive the amount of air it needs to run properly.
  • Engine timing—The timing and idle may need to be adjusted periodically.
  • PCV—The PCV valve helps reduce the number of toxic emissions from your vehicle. It will need to be replaced occasionally as it clogs up.
  • Points and condenser—These will need to be cleaned periodically.
  • Inspection of operating systems—Inspection of other operating systems, such as brakes, suspension, transmission, and air conditioner.
  • Other items—Oxygen sensor, distributor cap, oil, and coolant should be replaced as needed.

Although the tune up checklist is basically the same for most vehicles, it will be based on the age and mileage of your vehicle. Consult your owner’s manual for the recommended tune up intervals for your vehicle.
