Some car manufacturers recommend brake inspections at least every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, or every four to six month, whichever comes first.
Do you know what should be included in the inspection of your brakes?
- The thickness of the brake pad should be measured,
- The discs should be inspected for excessive wear,
- The caliper guide pins should be cleaned and lubricated to prevent sticking or seizing,
- The surface of the rotors should be cleaned to prevent squeaking.
Not all brake components have to be replaced at every brake repair. For example, the rotors may only need to be re-surfaced (making the surface smooth) instead of replacing them. This will keep your brakes functioning properly so that your vehicle remains safe to drive.
