Need to Know Why is Car Maintenance Important?
Some newer drivers may wonder why is car maintenance important? The answer is fairly simple—if you want to keep your current car for as long as possible and avoid expensive repairs, follow the vehicle maintenance schedule listed in your owner’s manual. Not only will you have a reliable source of transportation, but you will save valuable time and money spent at an auto shop. Plus, your car will retain a higher blue-book value for insurance or resale purposes.
There are several other little extras in addition to the basic vehicle maintenance items that every vehicle owner should do for their vehicle. Take a look below:
Before driving off each day...
Take a little walk around your car before driving off for the day. Inspect it for damage to the bodywork, flat or low tires, cuts in the sidewalls, cracks in the windows, or puddles under the car. Any of these seemingly small issues could cause serious problems while driving down the road.
At least once a week...
- Check tire pressure, tread depth, and general condition of all four tires AND the spare.
- Check the levels of oil, coolant/antifreeze, brake fluid, windshield washer, power steering fluid, and more. You may need to ask your mechanic for help in checking all fluids.
- Have any burned-out or broken bulbs replaced and make sure lenses are clean.
- Inspect your windshield wiper blades and consider replacing them if more than six months old.
- Inspect the bodywork for any serious damage that may cause a driving hazard.
- Mirrors and windows should be clear of cracks or chips.
- Wash your car, inside and out! If there is salt or chemicals on the road for ice, you should wash your vehicle every few days. A good wax job will help protect the finish and repel water and dirt.
If any of the items listed above present problems, head to your auto shop as soon as you can so before a seemingly small problem turns into a costly repair. The time spent on these inspections will save you money with fewer visits to your auto shop and give you peace of mind knowing you have a reliable vehicle.
